Chapter 5
Had someone told me trying to find the most opportune time to talk to your boss after fucking him would be so much of a hassle, maybe I wouldâve reconsidered even crossing that line. Emphasis on maybe.
Okay, I still wouldâve hit, but at least I wouldâve taken a second longer to think over the consequences.
As it were, Iâve been trying and failing to pull Rafael aside and talk to him about what the hell we did, but he always manages to get away, either by his bosses pulling him away to talk or by the relentlessâand lowkey pointlessâmeetings we always have at Red Wonder. I mean really, how many different conversations can we have about the hookup app de jour?
I glance at him from across the conference table and immediately loathe the way my stomach tightens ever so slightly. His eyes are zeroed in on Heidi from advertising, listening intently as she goes over the final version of the app logo and the color scheme they went with. Boring shit that really doesnât matter to our department, but the way Rafael stares at her, youâd think she was pointing out all the lines of code that are problematic.
His jaw clenches and unclenches as he scribbles down notes, and when he squints at her with focus, I can see the long lashes even from this far away. Itâs criminal, the way he looks so effortlessly beautiful. Heâs honestly fucking annoying.
Rafaelâs eyes cut to mine, and he looks me over briefly before he returns to what Heidi is saying. I donât know what to make of that. I told Desiree at the bar that he doesnât treat me any differently, and I genuinely appreciate that. I donât want him being all flirty on the clock or anything like that. This is my job and Iâm not gonna fuck it up. Well, fuck it up any worse than I already have.
At the same time, just once, I want him to look at me and smile. To think about me the way I think about him and how he begged for me that night. How badly he needed it.
Shit.
I shift in my seat and drop a hand into my lap nonchalantly. No way in hell am I popping wood in this goddamn meeting. With all my strength, I managed to lull the horny demon back into a slumber and try to pay attention. Just as I get situated once more and start to listen, Heidi says,
âOkay guys, letâs take a fifteen-minute break and then weâll reconvene to finish the meeting.â
âPerfect.â
Another voice adds, âGreat, because I need to go to the ladiesâ room.â
While the rest of the room clears out, I keep my eyes on Rafael as he finishes writing down something in his notebook. Finally, he places his pen down, and without looking up, he asks, âCan I help you with something, Jay?â
I swallow hard and do a quick survey of the room to make sure weâre alone. âI think we need to talk.
